I want a BASIC understanding of the contents of the quran, probably without reading the whole thing. Do you know of any easy-to-read versions in English that explains basic beliefs, such as how one should behave and things like that? Or another reliable written source for such information? What parts of the koran do you recommend somebody start with to get a good idea of what it contains?

(I do not want to convert to or from any religion, so please no comments from anybody about this).

17.22": Do not associate with Allah any other god, lest you sit down despised, neglected.

"17.23": And your Lord has commanded that you shall not serve (any) but Him, and goodness to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them (so much as) "Ugh" nor chide them, and speak to them a generous word.

"17.24": And make yourself submissively gentle to them with compassion, and say: O my Lord! have compassion on them, as they brought me up (when I was) little.

"17.25": Your Lord knows best what is in your minds; if you are good, then He is surely Forgiving to those who turn (to Him) frequently.

"17.26": And give to the near of kin his due and (to) the needy and the wayfarer, and do not squander wastefully.

"17.27": Surely the squanderers are the fellows of the Shaitans and the Shaitan is ever ungrateful to his Lord.

"17.28": And if you turn away from them to seek mercy from your Lord, which you hope for, speak to them a gentle word.

"17.29": And do not make your hand to be shackled to your neck nor stretch it forth to the utmost (limit) of its stretching forth, lest you should (afterwards) sit down blamed, stripped off.

"17.30": Surely your Lord makes plentiful the means of subsistence for whom He pleases and He straightens (them); surely He is ever Aware of, Seeing, His servants.

"17.31": And do not kill your children for fear of poverty; We give them sustenance and yourselves (too); surely to kill them is a great wrong.

"17.32": And go not nigh to fornication; surely it is an indecency and an evil way.

"17.33": And do not kill any one whom Allah has forbidden, except for a just cause, and whoever is slain unjustly, We have indeed given to his heir authority, so let him not exceed the just limits in slaying; surely he is aided.

"17.34": And draw not near to the property of the orphan except in a goodly way till he attains his maturity and fulfill the promise; surely (every) promise shall be questioned about.

"17.35": And give full measure when you measure out, and weigh with a true balance; this is fair and better in the end.

"17.36": And follow not that of which you have not the knowledge; surely the hearing and the sight and the heart, all of these, shall be questioned about that.

"17.37": And do not go about in the land exultingly, for you cannot cut through the earth nor reach the mountains in height.

"17.38": All this -- the evil of it -- is hateful in the sight of your Lord.

"17.39": This is of what your Lord has revealed to you of wisdom, and do not associate any other god with Allah lest you should be thrown into hell, blamed, cast away.

"2.177": It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards the East and the West, but righteousness is this that one should believe in Allah and the last day and the angels and the Book and the prophets, and give away wealth out of love for Him to the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and the beggars and for (the emancipation of) the captives, and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate; and the performers of their promise when they make a promise, and the patient in distress and affliction and in time of conflicts -- these are they who are {rue (to themselves) and these are they who guard (against evil).

42.36": So whatever thing you are given, that is only a provision of this world's life, and what is with Allah is better and more lasting for those who believe and rely on their Lord.

"42.37": And those who. shun the great sins and indecencies, and whenever they are angry they forgive.

"42.38": And those who respond to their Lord and keep up prayer, and their rule is to take counsel among themselves, and who spend out of what We have given them.

"42.39": And those who, when great wrong afflicts them, defend themselves.

"42.40": And the recompense of evil is punishment like it, but whoever forgives and amends, he shall have his reward from Allah; surely He does not love the unjust.

"42.41": And whoever defends himself after his being oppressed, these it is against whom there is no way (to blame).

"42.42": The way (to blame) is only against those who oppress men and revolt in the earth unjustly; these shall have a painful punishment.

"42.43": And whoever is patient and forgiving, these most surely are actions due to courage.

According to Muslims, the Qu'ran is written in a form of Arabic that is higher than poetry and it cannot be translated. So the answer is, there is no place you can get an "Easy-to-read Quran". What you would be getting is a mistranslation.

Check out the Islam[basics] section on this website

http://islamtomorrow.com/

The good thing is that it mentions the basics of Islam in the light of the Qur'an, so you will get an idea of what Muslims believe.

Being a Muslim, I recommend you to visit the above website, because there are lots of other websites which just spread propoganda about Islam.

go to online Quran http://www.thenoblequran.com/sps/nbq/

however, as much the translation seems accurate, nothing can be 100% accureate to the original language of the Quran. the original language of the Quran is more deep, strog, and balanced combination of verses.
