but as he read it to me, it sounded familiar. So I looked it up online and sure enough, it was written by someone else. It was a very sweet poem and very thoughtful of him. But why would he lie about something like that? And is it a big deal?

Sometimes if people are insecure or trying to impress and don't know how to do it, they do things like that...it sounds like he sincerely wanted to impress you...and was trying to be thoughtful.
People are not perfect...maybe you should ignore this for now unless he makes a habit of it....the author probably wouldn't appreciate it, but, oh well....I think people deserve the benefit of doubt - calling him on it might cause more trouble than it is worth, if your relationship is otherwise good.
If this has happened before or happens alot...that is different... then you might want to gently point out that you have seen that poem on the web and know that he did not write it, but thank him for his thoughtfulness in sharing it anyway and ask if there was some particular reason he felt compelled to say it was his work when it wasn't....tell him you are not angry, just curious why he would do such a thing. Best wishes whether you decide to talk to him or not!

I'm guessing that he lied because if he told you that he got it from somewhere else, that you would find it meaningless. He didn't think that you would appreciate the fact that even though someone else wrote the words, they did happen to say what he was feeling.
He shouldn't have lied, but you should explain to him why, even though he didn't write it, it's still a nice poem for him to share with you. I don't think this particular lie is a big deal, as long as you use this event to impress on him that he can't continue lying in the future, for any reason. At least his intentions were good, even if misguided.

It's not a big deal, he was trying to impress you. Very sweet. If you call him on it, he will probably never "write" another poem for you. Let it go, he's trying to show you love.

Yes it is. If he lies about this small thing what eles could he lie about? Seriously. However I understand maybe he wanted the perfect poem, but it isn't how he feels about you, it's someone elses poem.

I think it would be appropriate to bring it up to him in a loving humorous way...
Maybe after he says something romantic to you, you could giggle and say is that another poem from the internet or is that from you...

I would speak to him about it. If he doesn't have a sensible reason for doing it I would question what he is playing at.
