Is it because she is excessively licking it?? Cats will often lick in that spot if they are the nervous type and something is bothering them. Has anything changed in her environment?

I wouldn't put anything on it as she will most likely lick it and could get sick.

If it is not because she is licking it I would take her to a vet. She may have a fungus or ringworm, or some other problem that requires treatment from a vet.

It could have started many ways, a scratch, or a "hot spot", or a bite. But she needs to see a vet, because cats can get abscesses very easily, and the infection can travel through her body. So have it looked at to be on the safe side. You wouldn't necessarily see an abscess either, it could be internal.

Take her to the vet. It's gross, but that will also start to stink - it's an infected anal gland (cat's have those). It has to be "expressed". You could do it yourself - but the cat will get mean - may need local anesthetic and tranquilizer before the vet can do it - good luck!

Does you cat go outside? Maybe he/she was attacked or she rubbed it very hard on something. Clean with saline and go to teh vet. they have an oinment for it.
