Hi, my cat is as fat as they come. I've tried diet food and even tried walking him but he's still massive. I don't free feed him or give him too much, could it just be his metabalism? I'm afraid he's going to have a heart attack or something. Please help!

At least you are not free-feeding him as that is a sure way to get a very overweight cat. Now you must look into what you are feeding him. If you are getting his food from a grocery store you are feeding a poor quality food which is 2/3 corn. Corn is used to fatten slaughter animals who have a life-span of less than two years. For some reason the poor "diet" foods have increased carbohyrate and less protein. That's not a successful diet for humans either.

You must learn to read the labels on the food bags and put 50% of his diet into quality canned food. You have seen felines in zoos and they are always trim and well-muscled and they don't get anymore exercise for their size than does your house cat. They eat a raw meat diet.

I feed a raw meat diet to my cats and though I know you are not prepared to do that I will tell you that within six months of such a diet two 16 pound cats went down to a healthy 12 pounds. Meat is the important nutritional factor in a cat diet and if dry is feed it needs to be a high quality protein food.

I use some dry and canned food with my cats and I have found that they like Natural Balance - their are good choices in both wet and dry in this line and I have found it at my local pet discount store so the price is comparable to grocery store food and less expensive than the atrocious Science Diet food your vet has. There are many more excellent brands such as Eagle Pack, Solid Gold, Nature's Logic etc. which you can find in small, owner-operated pet stores.

With a quality food your cat will be well nourished and take the weight off gradually. He will STOP GAINING right away on the better diet.

My lady cat is an athletic monster that may do something, this woman can leap 7 feet up as though isn't something and waft for the era of a huge distance as though she became born to fly. My male cat is a lazy fat slob.

I have a very fat cat too. My vet said to take the cat off of hard food. Which I have done and it is slowly losing weight.

Exercise is always a good thing, but it sounds to me the "the old cat lady" knows exactly what she talking about. I would recommend you read her advice again, and see if it dont work for you.(I mean the kitty of course) Good luck, and a slow loss is better than fast. Just like a human.

My recommendation would be to take him to the vet for a complete blood test to rule out anything medical. Your vet may also recommend a diet food that will help to reduce his weight if he feels he is to heavy. good luck.

He could just be a generally big cat. get some toys and play with him. give him lots of water. don't put him on a leash. that might scare him. love him and play with a feather with him or something that gets him to bat at it.
