Electromechanical meters indicate the current through their coils. This causes the deflection of the needle. With the right external circuitry they can be used to measure AC or DC voltage, AC or DC current, resistance, and a host of other things.

A sensitive meter with a resistor in parallel can be used to measure current. With a resistor in series it can be used to measure voltage.
