Well, they can...it's called incest and it's not advisable.
Sorry, just looked a the category...you are talking about dogs. they can mate but you will be risking multiple deformities. If they have a genetic trait that is weak and they mate with a relative the chances of the weak trait becoming dominate is upped. They will be at a greater risk for many things, that is why so many dogs that are purebred have genetic problems when most mutts do not.

Yes. I have 3 puppies because a brother and sister got together, and I believed the people who told me he wouldn't be interested in her cause they were from the same litter.
However, it can cause problems. Our litter started with 7 -- one died within 15 minutes of birth, 2 more the next day because they couldn't nurse, another died at 8 days old. The four who are left are healthy, but the vet told me that the reason the four died was most likely birth defects from their parents being brother and sister.
My suggestion would be to keep the brother and sister separated. If you really want to mate the female, find a different male, cause the possibility of birth defects is very high.

In olden times royalty would interbreed to keep money, power and god knows what else in the family. Now we know that each time or step of inbreeding causes more and more medical problems. One very good reason to go far afield to marry and have children. A good example is the polygamist community of Pinesdale in Montana. The families therein have been inbreeding since the early 50s and how they have a lot of mentally retarded children and hemophyliacs, etc. that are a burden on the county social services department (medicaid). Inbreeding is a cruel and inhuman punishment meted out to innocent children for the sins of their parents. It is amazing what stupid human beings will do with little or no thought about the consequences.

Certainly - but it's not a good idea. You run into the same problem regarding inbreeding in any animal, whether dog, cat, cow, horse...
If you've a ********* you want to breed, do the right thing and take her to a stud service that'll give her a healthy, unrelated male dog to mate with. Same for a male dog - don't breed him with his sister!

my puppies from a brother and sister turned out beautiful. i think its when you breed a father and daughter that you get the bad traits like messed up teeth and odd colors.

Well, of course, the answer is 'no'. Think about it. You're gonna have sex with your brother/sister, whose your relative and your blood is one.

Techinically, yes. But the puppies will be prone to physical and mental problems from the get-go, so you don't want that to happen.
