That means to run around in an unordinary fashion, like an idiot pretty much.

I lived on a chicken farm when I was a kid. And it is true that when you cut off a chicken's head it will start flapping his wings and trying to run and flipping upside down and back on it's feet and over it goes again.

So running around like a chicken with it's head cut off means you are running wild with no apparent reason or direction. Just wildly out of control movements.

Like a happy kid running in and out of the house non stop.

I lived on a farm growing up and watched as my Dad and Mom would kill chickens....after the chickens get their heads cut off they really do flop around and attempt to move around...it's kinda creepy. But, that is where the saying comes from. Because they actually do run around.

Hi AHaskizzl, You cannot run around like a "chicken with it's head cut-off"! Why you may ask...? 1.) You are not a chicken. 2.) It is a "figure-of-speech"! 3.) It's an "involuntary" action IE; just like someone cutting off a "major" artery in your body. We [as humans] don't flop around...per-say (sp?) We can/do have jerking, shaking, motions etc. I am not a medical expert...it's just "my opinion"? XOXO Moonpie

OH MY GOODNESS!! Have you honestly ever seen a chicken with it's head cut off? You would know what someone was talking about if you saw it.... It's gross but somehow mildly amusing... And anyway, It's just a figure of speech.
