I don't think you can compete with the imports on price.
Why not add some strange feature that could become a fad and make people want to get the ones you make. What about a glow in the dark paint on the outside of it? What about an eraser shaped like a popular cartoon character or like a popular body part or a halloween zombie finger? What about it having a clip on the end of a short pencil so that you could snap it onto a body piercing ring and hang the pencil there?
