my wife has a black eye, and i heard that putting something cold (like a bag of frozen peas) will make the swelling go down.
the problem is, she has a black eye because i hit her really hard with a bag of peas.
is there any way i can make the swelling go away before she wakes up?

Well if she doesn't even know she has the black eye then don't worry about it. When she wakes up and sees it just tell her you heard her thrashing about in the bed this morning and was wondering what was up--she obviously hit herself.
And just curious...what were you doing with the frozen peas??? Placing the family jewels on them to reduce the swelling from a long night of tea bagging action????
