Generally, unknown numbers were never listed in directories
Private numbers are usually numbers that have been witheld.

Normally if a number is unknown there will be no connection made if you call it....... If it´s a Private number there are a number of options through the exchanges to safeguard against unwanted callers

Unknown - someone blocked the number from showing up on caller id
Private - not listed so it won't ever show up on caller id

unknown number is a number that was comes to your phone but cannot be seen that what you call when comes to your phone
but it was a private number to the caller who called you makes it unavailable when he makes a call to other phones but we can know that number by calling/asking your operater
