The key is separate to the ignition key and i would prefer not to pay a fortune with a locksmith. Will i ultimately need to buy a new cap and key and get the old one removed or is there a key out there somewhere which i can buy for a few quid.

getting a replacement key from ford will cost a fortune, and takes time. cheapest easiest and quicest way is to break the lock on deisel cap (take flat head screwdriver place in lock and smash in with screwdriver turn and cap should come away) replacement caps are available from most retailers like halfords for around £5-£10 with new key

depends if it's the original lock which i very much doubt as 1 key normally does all locks, so it's likely it's had a new 1 at some point. i'd just buy a new cap with lock and break the old 1 off. you probably get 1 from a scrappy for a fiver

you will have to go to a scrapper and get the locking cap and key from their they are easy to take off once you have a replacement.
use a screwdriver in the lock keep turning back and forth and it will release although it will break the lock
