This is the biggest misconception in Islam, no doubt resulting from the constant stereotyping and bashing the media gives Islam. When a gunman attacks a mosque in the name of Judaism, a Catholic IRguerrilla sets off a bomb in an urban area, or Serbian Orthodox militiamen rape and kill innocent Muslim civilians, these acts are not used to stereotype an entire faith. Never are these acts attributed to the religion of the perpetrators. Yet how many times have we heard the words 'Islamic, Muslim fundamentalist. etc.' linked with violence.
Politics in so called "Muslim countries" may or may not have any Islamic basis. Often dictators and politicians will use the name of Islam for their own purposes. One should remember to go to the source of Islam and separate what the true religion of Islam says from what is portrayed in the media. Islam literally means 'submission to God' and is derived from a root word meaning 'peace'.
Islam may seem exotic or even extreme in the modern world. Perhaps this is because religion doesn't dominate everyday life in the West, whereas Islam is considered a 'way of life' for Muslims and they make no division between secular and sacred in their lives. Like Christianity, Islam permits fighting in self-defense, in defense of religion, or on the part of those who have been expelled forcibly from their homes. It lays down strict rules of combat which include prohibitions against harming civilians and against destroying crops, trees and livestock.
NOWHERE DOES ISLAM ENJOIN THE KILLING OF INNOCENTS..
The Quran says: "Fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. God does not love transgressors." (Quran 2:190) "If they seek peace, then seek you peace. And trust in God for He is the One that heareth and knoweth all things." (Quran 8:61) War, therefore, is the last resort, and is subject to the rigorous conditions laid down by the sacred law. The term 'jihad' literally means 'struggle'. Muslims believe that there are two kinds of jihad. The other 'jihad' is the inner struggle of the soul which everyone wages against egotistic desires for the sake of attaining inner peace.

Most people in this day and age are confussed about Islaam.
The people that blow themselves up along with others, saying its Jihaad, that is totally wrong, and against Islaam.
First:
Killing yourself is suicide-Really bad in Islam
Second:
Killing others- innocent people
Third:
Its mass murder.
That is not what Islaam teaches.
Do you even know what Islaam means?
It literally means peace, and also to submit yourself to the will of Allaah. There are many conditions that a Muslim must abide to.
I would like to bring a point out, if you do use the Qur'aan to refute us, please use explanation and the write translation. There are many translation that have errors, which make people like you have a negative thought about Islaam.
Islaam is a religion of peace. The only religion that Thanks and remembers God all Mighty in all affairs.
Yes you get the mislead Muslims who are bought to this state due to their knowledge, lack of teachers, and ignorance.
Before you criticise Islaam, learn about it, don't just go by what the media and Bush say about Islaam. Learn Islaam yourself with all the proofs from the Qur'aan and from the Prophet Muhammad (my peace and blessings be upon him).
All you people are ignorant, and confussed. For more information on Islaam and Muslims, and any other issues please do contact me on epyon000@hotmail.co.uk and I wil be more than happy to talk.
And please read the links below, if you don't shows how ignorant you are. Also get a copy of the Translation of the Qur'aan. And no there is no whitewashing or anything involved. Stop criticising Islaam without knowledge, gain the knowledge then say something. Gain knowledge by reading the Qur'aan.:

If not, why not? There is no brainwashing in the Qur'aan.

Funny, the first two paragraphs sound just like Orthodox Jewish laws - formulated some 2000 years before mohommed.
As for what the koran says, I merely suggest that people should actually READ it. There's far too much whitewashing and history rewriting going on in this PC age.
In addition, read the history books regarding the invasion of Spain and the mediterranean countries by the armies of the Emirs and the Almohades.
Makes the crusades look like a quiet afternoon with the grandparents.
The problem is that most religions mature and begin to recognise that their "Books of the Law" are not suited to civilised society. So, in most cases, the book is read allegorically.
In the case of mohommedanism however, the changes have never occured and the book is still taken as word for word literal "TRUTH".
The real truth is that it's just as fictional as all the other so-called holy books. The problem is that people still "believe" it for some reason.

Thank you, i am of the understanding that not all terrorist are Muslims, those of the Islamic faith no this most of the western people no this, it is not the peaceable Muslim i have a problem with it is the nine veiled women of your faith who have bombs strapped to their bodies who attack a soft target, or fly a jet into a trade tower.
and then put out a video later released doing so in the name of your religion. just as i realise not all catholics are members or the IRA, or all Protestants of Irish decent are in the Ida. to become a freedom fighter battling against an oppressive dictatorship is far removed from fighting against a nation because they are different from you and worship the same god only called by another name, before very long it will escalate until we are led to believe that not all Muslims are terrorists, only the dead ones.
and i do not want that to come.so my advice is rather than allow your religion to be hi jacked, stand up and denounce the terrorists within, just like the catholic women of ulster did. far too many wars have been fought in the name of a religion. may you god go with you . regards FL

ok pronounced. some people who've already responded your question, even confronted with the information you gave them, nonetheless insist on branding the 'vast majority' of Muslims with their very own lack of understanding. related to terrorism, you forgot to show that the Zionists in the 40's committed diverse terrorist acts before Israel grew to alter right into a state, on the British! thank you the standard public of people who've responded have did not comprehend my factor. Jewish extremists underwent numerous acts of terrorism against Arabs and the British, certainty. So, given the premises, why hasn't the West condemned Israel, a State shaped out of terrorism, why isn't the west overtly condemning the Jewish race as an entire, because it has customarily finished against Muslims? by way of fact it extremely is absurd, yet for some reason, it extremely is alright to do this with Muslim people and Muslim states. Given the premises, to me, there must be an ulterior objective in the back of this 'us vs. them' concepts-set that we get from western states such by way of fact the united statesof A

You think Islam is unique in being mis-characterized by the media? Ha. When a nutcase bombs an abortion office or shoots an abortionist, all pro-life Christians are characterized as nuts. The government then attempts to use anti-mafia laws against pro-lifers speaking out against abortion. Islam hardly has the market cornered on bad press.
However, your comment permitting "fighting" in defense of religion certainly leaves a wide berth to justify the attacks that extemists have made.

I don't agree. I'm fed up with the defense that they aren't "real " muslims, or the media portray people in a bad way. After 911 we saw thousands of peace loving muslims cheering in the streets, celebrating a cowardly and barbaric act of violence. If you support that behaviour you're as bad as the terrorists, ie a bunch of scumbags. goodnight

You're new here right? Hope you can handle the responses you gonna get in this forum. Your peoples action and non action speakes louder than words. The world is seeing what Islam has to offer everyday a bomb explodes and nothing is being done by your leaders to stop them, being silent about these issues only supports it.

Too long and you protest a bit too much.
What are you scared of?
Is your faith not strong?
This is exactly the problem, although the majority of the ones who live in the west are a lot more moderate,Islam will never allow for freedom of all religions.
It wants to be dominant.

The acts you are talking about are rare and just one of attacks carried out by lunatics. Every other month we read of acts of violence under the name of Islam. According to polls carried out in Muslim countries the majority of people support Islamic terrorists and their violent means. Such incidents can not be carried out en masse if there is no ground support. Basically all the Muslims countries are repressive regimes in which they do not enjoy basic freedom. In democratic countries these people get freedom and equal rights but they misuse them to spread hate and intolerence. If they cant integrate in the mainstream they are free to go back to their repressive societies.

sorry, you sound like another fundi or a convert and another one in complete denial, how very convenient that islam encourages fighting in self-defence...much of the problem is perceived threats or attacks than actual or real. Who can say boo anymore without a muslim falling apart and demanding death. And the majority do nothing, which in my book is tacit agreement. Hope you feel abit better after your rant though.
