In addition to some of the excellent advice above, kidney stones should always be treated in hospital when the pain is acute. Pain relief is usually by intramuscular injection (normally diclofenac). You will be asked to pass urine into a bottle each time you go so the nurse can test it every time and also sieve it for stones. A specific x-ray called a KUB (kidneys, urethra, bladder) will be taken - some types of stones are radio-opaque and show up quite well on x-ray. If nothing obvious is seen, another x-ray called an IVP/IVU (intravenous pyelogram/urogram) will be done. This is where the vein is injected with a contrast medium which circulates down to the kidneys, ureters and bladder - this is much better for highlighting any stones. Occasionally an ultrasound scan may be done - this is to look for something called hydronephrosis, where the kidney is surrounded by fluid due to a blockage. Usually, small stones will just pass when you pee, but sometimes they need either surgical removal or a procedure called lithotripsy. Lithotripsy is a blast of sonic waves that shatters the stone into tiny fragments which are then passed naturally. As everyone has said, kidney stones can be extremely painful when they're on the move - they affect far more men than women for some reason, but all the women I've ever nursed who've had them say it's worse than childbirth.

Kidney stones often do not cause any symptoms. Usually, the first symptom of a kidney stone is extreme pain, which occurs when a stone acutely blocks the flow of urine. The pain often begins suddenly when a stone moves in the urinary tract, causing irritation or blockage. Typically, a person feels a sharp, cramping pain in the back and side in the area of the kidney or in the lower abdomen. Sometimes nausea and vomiting occur. Later, pain may spread to the groin.

If the stone is too large to pass easily, pain continues as the muscles in the wall of the tiny ureter try to squeeze the stone along into the bladder. As a stone grows or moves, blood may appear in the urine. As the stone moves down the ureter closer to the bladder, you may feel the need to urinate more often or feel a burning sensation during urination.

If fever and chills accompany any of these symptoms, an infection may be present. In this case, you should contact a doctor immediately.

i was hospitalised with a severe kidney infection last dec. my syptoms included a dull but constant pain in my right hand side towards the back which can move round to the front and down to the groin. if the pain got unbearable i found that solpadeine worked. this pain will be coupled with an urge to go to the toilet, which may hurt or very little will pass but you will be going more often than normal. sometimes you will get a temperature and you can also vomit if the infection is bad enough. my advice is go to the doctor who will do a urine sample and prescribe you antibiotics if necessary! hope you get better soon!

Kidney stones are very painful. You can feel pain when passing urine. Sometime they pass through the urine. Kidney infection or kidney disease symptoms can be the following:

- bloating around the ankles (water retention)
- protein the urine (urine test needed)
- createne level rising (blood work needed)
- itchy bumps on skin due to too much phosphorus in the blood
- high blood pressure

If it's a large kidney stone you'll get lower back pain on one side.
Smaller stones tend to flush through into the urinary tract from the kidney and get trapped, causing intense pain called renal colic.
It is very painful and the best relief is to drink huge quanities of water to flush it through your system.
Larger stones have to be destroyed by laser treatment or removed by surgery.

Yep, my husband has just suffered these several times. It starts with a dull ache low in the abdomen (if male it travels down to the testicles). This gets increasingly worse until the pain brings you to your knees its so bad. The pain can also be felt in the lower back. Sometimes blood can show in your urine or it can be so inute that a urine test will detect it. Also urine may be smelly or dark coloured. You need to go to your GP if you suspect you have them and he will arrange tests. The best advice in the meantime is drink LOTS of water and keep moving around as much as possible. If the stone isnt to large it may pass on its own. Good luck
