Paint the ends of a bunch of popsicle sticks blue. Add a white paint dot to some of them. Name all the blue ended sticks a 'species' and the white do sticks a 'subspecies' for the 5 year old.
We taught our daughter algebra at 3 with popsicle sticks. She 'got' Venn diagrams, equations, and other stuff, and she loved painting sticks!
She's 25 and in med school now. Thanks for reviving those fun memories!!!

Why would you want to? I have a hard time believing that she just walked up to you and said "Daddy, what is a subspecies?". Why try to fill her head full of information that she is not ready for? Make the answer appropriate to her age. I am sure that you can find a way to explain what she wanted to know without using terminology that is over her head. Think about it.
Good luck!

Ditto. Why does a 5 year old need to know about subspecies? Can they even read yet?

Don't understand why you would need to explain this to a 5 year old in the first place. Let the difficult science stuff come when he's going to school and let the teacher explain these things to him/her. There is no reason I can think of to have to explain this at all at this age.

'Subspecies' is a highly scientific zoological term. Why should you need to explain it to a five year old?
Not even sure I fully understand it.

Yikes! That's difficult. With a 5 yr. old, I would use picture examples.
