First off you don't know who has the day off, Lucy or Linda.

We don't know who had the day off. It's irregular because it could mean that Lucy is called Linda when ever Lucy has a day off. Try some commas to get all the different ways this sentence can be interpreted, or, try restructuring the sentence so it only means one thing.

The correct answer is A, but you should really be able to figure it out yourself.

Lucy is the subject. The sentence has only one subject.

The verb 'called' is completely regular.

It doesn't matter than we don't know whether she phoned, shouted or used semaphore. We do know that she got in contact, which is an adequate interpretation of 'called' in the context.
