My husband was injured in Iraq last year. What happened with his mail was this: His direct supervisor (in this case, a Gunnery Sergeant) took up all of his mail and packed it in a box and sent it to the next of kin (that being me) since my hubby was slated to come home due to his injury. About a month after he got home, the box showed up.

My first thought is it goes to the "Dead Letter Office".
I will assume it would either be returned to sender or possibly be sent to his/her next of kin.
