My husband was injured in Iraq last year. What happened with his mail was this: His direct supervisor (in this case, a Gunnery Sergeant) took up all of his mail and packed it in a box and sent it to the next of kin (that being me) since my hubby was slated to come home due to his injury. About a month after he got home, the box showed up.

My first thought is it goes to the "Dead Letter Office".
I will assume it would either be returned to sender or possibly be sent to his/her next of kin.

It is forwarded to his residence, the official one that is listed on his records.

someone opens it to see if there is food or money in which they then take and throw the letter away
