hey Q,

Use Adobe Photoshop, you can set the transparency to 50% on both photos, or some combination. There are other programs that do this too.

Using Adobe Photoshop:
First be sure that the two images are the same resolution and of a similar size. Make sure they are in the same color mode and the same working color space.
Create a new document that matches the resolution and is friendly to the size of the two photos.
Select all of one image and then hold down your control(PC) or command(MAC) key and with the move tool, move the selected image onto the new document. Do the same with the other image.
You now have both images on the same document, but with independant layers. These layers can be manipulated by masking or with opacity sliders to create the blend you want.
You might also explore the "blend if" option in the special effects dialogue box if combining a dark top image with a lighter bottom image.
There are a bazillion ways to do what you are asking. Each image composition will change according to the content and affect you are trying to achieve. There is no simple answer, that is why I teach Photoshop in Dallas. We explore many options in our learning sessions. I may be offering lessons online soon. Go to www.digitaldooda.com
