Actually anything that is used to enhance, change, or otherwise alter or compliment the flavors of a product can be considered a sauce. Early chefs used sauces to mask the taste of meats and other proteins that might have or soon to have turned (spoiled).

Ranch dressing is one of those things that started as a salad dressing but has turned into a dipping sauce for hot wings, veggies..and can also be used as a chicken marinade!

Yes you can use dressings for sauses and marinades alike,try marinading chickin breasts in sundried tomato dressing for 2 or more hrs,with rice on the side and use catilina dressing warmed to pour over both and serve.Try your ranch dressing as a special sause for burgers and taco's..the kids will love it..
