Measuring dog sizes is usually from their front paw to the top of their heads. Medium would mean the top of the dogs head shouldn't be higher than the average adult's knee or by weight small would be up to about 7kg's, medium from 7-25kg's, large from 25-40kg's and larger would in most cases (when its not a grossly overweight labrador) be classified as giant breed. Brittany Springers fall under medium and even though Basset Hounds don't grow tall they too are medium build. Labradors and Shepards fall under large. Great Danes, Saint Bernards and Irish Wolfhounds fall under giant breeds.

Well, I have a basset hound, he is considered a medium dog even though he weights 72lbs. The vet says that he is in awesome shape and is not over weight. I think that the tagging of Medium dog is talking about the frame and not weight. So they could be a "medium" dog but still weight quite a bit.

Less than 50 lbs. I've seen a few that were close to 50, but the properly bred were less. They are a nice size, not too small and not too large.
