As a New Yorker, I go with a lightweight, thermal insulated, 3/4 length parka with a detachable hood (Like Columbia or North Face) and layers...You'll probably be on the move sightseeing and in and out of your outerwear so you don't want to be overly bundled up. This and your favorite hat, scarf and gloves should do it!

P.S. You didn't specify if your visit was to NYC or Upstate...My reccommendation is for city living, If you're going Upstate, bring your long johns and your boots! LOL

As warm as you can. A heavy, down coat, with a hood is best. Warm shoes - boots, scarf, gloves and a hat are also recommended. Come prepared for frigid weather if you are native to a warm climate. You're gonna be really chilly.

I would say a thick, long coat. Something that will cover you as much as possible but will also be thick enough not to penetrate through. Look for something with a gortex lining. This will help alot. It is a material they use just for this type of weather.

Because the weather is somewhat unpredictable, I would think in terms of LAYERS. That way you can add layers if you're cold or remove them if you get hot. Bring a small knapsack or something to stuff a jacket in when you go out.

the weather in NYC can be tricky; one day its warm the next its cold. I say bring a heavy coat and a warm one just in case.
