Definately!
I am a mom of 7. We have a 72 hour kit for each of us, including my husband and I. Packed and ready to grab in case we need to evacuate immediately. We are in Tornado, Flood and Hurricane area. Each kit has everything each of us needs to survive on our own for 72 hours, it is individualized for each of us, including our meds, identifying info, food packaged into Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 etc.
Also, the other supplies etc. a few others have already listed.
You can do an internet search, just type in "72 hour kit" for a list of basic supplies. You can purchase them already made or make up your own. My husband and I have a nice hiking backpack with a frame and we carry the bulk of the stuff, as well as our older boys.
It's very important that we are prepared. That way our kids aren't afraid when a natural disaster occurs. Instead, knowing that we are prepared, we can focus on safety and securing the home etc. instead of panic and fear.
It's funny because when a storm starts, the smaller ones will say..."Hey mom, can we get our 72 hour kits now?"

Sort of. I live in South Carolina, and sometimes we have ice storms and loose power in winter, and we can have violent spring storms.
I have fire wood, a couple of bags of charcoal that does not require lighter fluid, we have a kerosene heater (I keep about 5-10 gals. of fuel), I keep my propane tank for the grill full even in the winter, I always keep batteries, bottled water, and plenty of canned goods, pet food and first aid supplies on hand.
The main thing I do is keep all of this organized and in an easy to reach place.
The fuel, we keep stored in the garage for safety purposes. I also have a file that I could take with me quickly with our birth certs., immunization records, and ss#'s, plus copies of insurance policies and our pets' shot records. This sounds sort of panicky, I know, but no one ever intends for a bad event to happen, that is why it's called an accident or an emergency. It only takes a little time to be prepared, and it gives one peace of mind. If I had to leave with my family, I could be prepared and out in a matter of minutes.

Yeah. We kept candles adn flashlights. There is always water and non-parishable food in our pantry. When the electricity goes out, we just use the fireplace to cook. It works really wel, you'd be surprised
