send a funny text joke to him and see if you get a delivery notice back. he may be out of town but surely he can still get phone calls? what message do you get when you ring him? has he blocked your number from his phone?
depending what you get back from your text message, answer, nothing, delivered message or unable to deliver message will tell you if he is avoiding your calls or has changed his umber or turned it off.
