The Truth About Muhammad
by Robert Spencer
Meet the real Muhammad:
Muhammad's bizarre reaction to his first "revelation": "I will go to the top of the mountain and throw myself down that I may kill myself"
The heretical Christian who convinced Muhammad he was a prophet – and may have taught him his erroneous views of Christianity
Islamic borrowings from Judaism, Christianity, and Zoroastrianism – and Muhammad's enraged replies to charges that he borrowed material rather than received actual divine revelations
The "revelation" that allowed Muhammad to marry his beautiful daughter-in-law
The strange incident in Muhammad's life that makes it virtually impossible to prove rape in Islamic countries today
The real "Satanic Verses" incident (not the Salman Rushdie version): how Muhammad's attempt to win over his opponents ended with his saying he had been inspired not by God, but by Satan
How the Qur'an's teaching on warfare against unbelievers developed – with constant war to establish the hegemony of Islamic law as the last stage
The first year of the Muslim calendar: not when Muhammad was born or became a prophet, but when he became a warlord
How Muhammad used the graphic lure of Islamic Paradise to urge his warriors to fight furiously to extend his rule
"Kill every Jew who comes into your power": why Muhammad became so angry with both Jews and Christians – with disastrous consequences that are still playing out in the world today
The momentous command by Muhammad that led to good being identified with anything that benefited the Muslims, and evil with anything that harmed them --without reference to any larger moral standard
Muhammad's child bride – and the terrible consequences his marriage to a nine-year-old still has in the Islamic world
"This is the caravan of the Quraysh possessing wealth. It is likely that Allah may give it to you as booty": how Muhammad gave divine sanction to the Muslims' bloody raids
"War is deceit": the permission Muhammad gave his followers to lie in order to gain an advantage over their enemies
How Muhammad broke the principal treaty he entered into, again setting a pattern for Muslim states thereafter
Muhammad's commands to his followers to wage perpetual war against non-Muslims, including Jews and Christians
Muhammad on women's rights: women "are prisoners with you having no control of their persons"
"If justice is not to be found with me then where will you find it?" Why Muhammad still stands for Muslims as the supreme model for human behavior
"I will expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula, and will not leave any but Muslims" – and other statements by Muhammad that contemporary jihadists take very seriously
Islamic tolerance? The onerous tax burden and other discriminatory regulations mandated for non-Muslims under Islamic law
How Muhammad ordered the killing of apostates from Islam
The massacre of a Jewish tribe by Muhammad that was invoked by modern-day jihadists at the beginning of Israel's July 2006 operations against Hizballah in Lebanon
"Embrace Islam, and your lives and property will be safe": Muhammad's threatening letters to the rulers of the lands around Arabia
Muhammad's frequent avowals that the Muslims would overcome the empires bordering on Arabia and one day stand as masters of the world
"I have been made victorious with terror" – and other statements of Muhammad on his deathbed
Six steps that American leaders can and must take in order to protect our nation from Islamic jihad terrorism

Unfortunately, many Christians still feel this way today -- that the Bible is the literal word of God and that we should live our lives according to its teachings. This is all fine and good except for the parts where the Chosen People wage war on everyone else and take their lands and possessions, kill all the men, women and children or place them into slavery, etc. etc. etc (read Deuterotomy sometime... real warm and fuzzy stuff). The Muslim world is the same way, with a fundamentalist minority who take every word of the Qu'ran literally and adhere to a strict, almost monastic lifestyle based on its tenets. The majority of both Christian and Muslim adherents, however, tend toward a more relaxed stance, using the Bible or Qu'ran, respectively, as starting points, based on the parts we can all agree on (generally, the Ten Commandments are good ideas, honoring your parents and refraining from killing, stealing or chasing after your neighbor's wife... that sort of thing)
The problem is that both Christianity and Islam began in a period of history when the moral codes they espouse, the imagery they evoke, and the lessons they teach were timely and relevant to the people who practiced them, but may not be quite as timely or as relevant to followers today. Our societies have changed in the nearly two millennia since these religions were born, and the mythologies upon which they are based do not evoke the same sort of mystical experience they once did.
Religion and religious texts have been used to form the foundation of society since people first gathered together to form communities. In the right time and place, they create a moral code that people can use to distinguish right from wrong, as appropriate for the society in which they are used. We live in a different world from that of the Holy Lands 2000 years ago, and our religious beliefs should more closely reflect the times. I'm not suggesting that we adopt "Buddy Christ" or some swingin' version of Mohammed, but rather to find ourselves a mythology that makes sense to us in contemporary terms.

Some Christian groups have a more metaphorical interpretation of the bible yes; some Muslim group do too, of the Qu'ran. I think you are only seeing a small part of each side of your equation. Each religion has a huge rage from very liberal to extremely strict.
Muslims themselves might be a little slower to let Islam evolve, because they have daily reminders of their faith as it stands (the prayer 5 times a day) whereas the less practice-focused Christianity has the once a week. Also, in Muslim countries, the media and the political control is almost completely in the hands of practitioners of Islam and therefore citizens have constant reinforcement of symbols and ideals of their faith.
In many Christian countries, the media and government are often in the hands of non-Christians ,giving citizens a wider set of ideals, and Sunday-Christians, that sadly often fall from grace, leaving citizens with less than perfect role-models for the Christian-religion.
I do think you are mistaken regarding Muslims and failure...
as Muslim thought and Christian thought would be still floundering in the dark ages had they not both been borrowing and building on eachothers achievements through history, not to mention Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, and every other religion out there thats been around long enough to have made an impact on civilization.
Humans are always searching for "the answer"; the set of rules that will allow them to know that they are on the right track. It is very compelling when someone says they have found it, and then others believe it, and then still others until a majority have adopted it. Unfortunately, that is when we humans get lazy and or crazy. We forget what it means to fight for what we believe in and then we start letting the words have more meaning than the inspiration that they gave us in the first place. No one holds the truth with a strong enough grip to be able to judge other peoples' truths as untrue.

For a thousand years Muslims were the most advanced nation on earth. At that time they were also deeply religious, but progressive too. Islam and the Quran encourage Muslims to learn about science and everything else. That's why between the years of 700s to 1600s Muslims provided the world with all the development in science, mathematics, medicine, astronomy and chemistry and much much more.
While, Chriatianity prevented the Christians from making advances in science and technology, the Quran provided the Muslims the encouragement needed to make the advances in science and technology.
You are confusing extremist with regular religious people in Islam.

Have you actually read half the questions on this site?
The majority of god botherers that post still take the Bible as 100% factual and live their lives by it.
They deny evolution, and other sciences.
They look down on others who don't share their own crackpot beliefs.
And you say it's the Muslims that have failed to move on.
The only ones that have truly moved on, away from over bearing belief systems that have no basis in proveable fact, are us Atheists.
And as for continuous failure, many of the worlds best thinkers have been muslims.

Christians left the Bible? When? Sir Isaac Newton was a firm Believer. Same with Francis Bacon. In fact, MOST scientists until recently were strong, Bible believing Christians. Your ignorant attitude toward those whose shoulders you stand on does you no credit at all. And in case you forgot, Muslims used to be very good scientists, before they went nutzoid. They invented our decimal numbering system, algebra, and much more. They have lost much in the past 1200 years. But that's what happens when you believe that just any 'angel of light' MUST be Gabriel. Satan just took advantage of them.

Islam was founded by Muhammad, who wrote the Quran in the 7th century based on his "phrophecy" from Gabriel the Angel. One of the arguments that Muhammad was decieved or mislead is that all the rules and laws of the Quran center around the governmental law of 7th century Arabia.
You may also know some Amish people. You may also know that you will never be able to ask an Amish person anything on the internet. They believe that if any technology or advancement was not in the Bible, it is evil. (Basically)
True Christianity has very little to do with what you wear or how you talk. Christianity is a personal relationship with our Creator and his son (Jesus Christ). Although, the foundation for the modern Christian culture is still the same. It is based on:
1: Love of God
2: Love of Others
Other than strict Pentacostals (I go to a Pentacostal church) most denominations don't have much to say about how you look or what you do for a living (with the exception of immoral trades). Basic Muslim culture still centers around the time of Muhammad (7th century Arabia). Christianinty centers around Christ, not time.
People from every culture and walk of life can be a Christian because it is all about a relationship. Others would tell you it is about rules to "be good", but that is also a lie. Being moral is not something that we are told to do by the church. It is something we WANT to do as we grow in our relationship with Christ.
Muslims believe that on the day of judgement all their "good" deeds will be weighed against all of the "evil" deeds they did in their life. The problem is that no Muslim can tell you how much "good" they need to do in order to be saved. The religion is based on deeds.
Christianity on the other hand, reconizes that we are all "sinners". There is no chance that we will ever be close enough to perfect to be worthy of salvation according to the standards of God. Therefore Jesus was sent to "pay the price" of our sins. The only contigency for this salvation is that we trust and believe that He did this for us. It is not based on our ability to do more good than bad. Being a "good person" just comes as a result of acceptance of this gift from God. Our salvation is not based on our own works. It is only based on us accepting forgiveness.
Christians don't make thier world revolve around 1st Century Arabic law when Christ died. We base our faith on Christs death and resurrection. Therefore our worldview changes in light of something greater than the "here and now". There is more than wold laws and tradition, but if we can't accept what Christ has done or even that God exists. We have no hope.
Summary: Muslims center around 7th century Arabic law.
Christians center around Christ, but no the law of the times.
The Bible offers priciples and morals that are applicable to every situation of current times. Everything in the Bible applies to teh reality of today. The principles and morals of the Bible are timeless, not for another planet.
