Now, now is good - in the old days vets stuck to the six month rule, but it's been proven that's is actually better to get them fixed even younger - so....now! :-)

Make an appointment right away. It should be done before the cat is six months old to forego the possibility for spraying behavior to start. It is a simple, non-invasive operation and your cat will recover very quickly.
It is easy to put it off and time goes by very quickly when young cats are reaching sexual maturity. Soon humans will be busy with the holiday season so do it ASAP.

Make the appointment now.
Up to date information says cats can be de-sexed from 8 weeks of age onward. Most vets are supporters of early de-sexing. It is less stressful for the kitten and recovery is faster.
A world wide survey on early de-sexing was sent to top cat judges. The survey included questions in regard to the cats attaining their full body shape/size, etc.
All said it made no difference when the cat was de-sexed to its physical development - except for one breed! That breed was the British Shorthair. It was found the head didn't develop to the size it should for showing purposes if it was de-sexed early.

As a former vet tech, I can say that we always recommended neutering right at about 6 months of age. Your vet may go ahead and do it now. It is a good idea to not wait longer than 6 months because they can start marking and spraying and you definately do NOT want that. Tomcat urine is the smelliest stuff on the planet also.
I'm glad you are going to get him neutered!! That surgery is probably the easiest one to do and he will get over it very quickly.

I just had my cats fixed (mother and kitten) and the kitten was 5 months old. According to the vet, cats reach sexual maturity at 6 months, so now would be a good time to do it.

I believe that it is seven months for a cat. To be sure you should just call your local vet.
