Give it a few months and that'll keep the more genuine guys interested, and get rid of the ones who only want one thing. That'll also give you time to see if all the info he gives you adds up. Talking on the phone beforehand is good too. I;'ve met several people online and there was never a problem, so although it goes without saying that you need to be careful, I think it's vastly overexaggerated that everyone you meet is dangerous. As long as you follow the basic safety rules and never let him know where you live, and don't get into a car with him first time, don't let all the horror stories put you off. A lot of men are genuine.

I would say until you are comfortable enough to meet them. Only you would know. I talked to a guy online first then on the phone, and had a date soon after. Still together. Your instincts would tell you if he is trustworthy or not. Also meet in a public place. We went out to dinner then walked on a dock. It was so romantic. I loved every minute of it.

The earlier the better because the more you talk online you do not know the real qualities and you keep on imagining more wrong thing about the person that actually what she/he is. Therefore meeting early would reduce the gap of reality and imagination thereby reducing the hurt / cheated feelings.

However long you take to meet up, just always be very careful, meet in a crowded place and if you can take someone with you!!

I met my fiance through myspace. We talked and IM'ed for a week, then we met. We have been inseperable ever since. Just make sure to meet in a public place where you know people.

Long enough to have had several phone conversations. Long enough to know his/her home number and work number. No cell phones don't count. As a general rule I say 1 month.

AFTER you have verified EVERYTHING about them... and at least seen a current picture of them holding 2006 calendar...
Take notice of EVERY red flag, and check it out, first!
It's easy to lie online....

Give them your phone number after about a month and then let things go from there.
