These people who want religion taught in schools want it as long as it is their religion being taught. What the fundies fail to realize is that if you open that door and allow religion to be taught in schools, the door opens for all religions, not just the one they follow. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion....this has been ruled by conservative and liberal judges alike to denote the famous seperation of church and state. It doesn't say that students can not pray in school all they want, all it states is that the school (i.e. the government) can not promote, endorse, or organize any of it. Could you imagine religion being taught and promoted in school? Look at all the religious violence throughout the world, and you want to set up that same scenario within the schools? If you want your child taught within a religous framework then do it yourself at home or send them to a private school.

Growing up in Utah I think the system of having Seminary classes in a small building close to high schools and middle schools was a good way to keep religion close but separate. I think it doesn't matter what atheists and skeptics think, as long as teachers give tests there will always be prayer in schools. People who criticize religion are polarized in their way of thinking, and they might do well to allow a moment of silence along with the pledge of allegiance each day, even if it's just for students to meditate and gather their thoughts to get ready to learn for the day. There doesn't have to be any compulsion to say the pledge of allegiance, and there doesn't have to be any religious vocabulary used when announcing a moment of silence. People who are vocal and strident about any position would do well to slow down, think carefully, and practice kindness and seeing things from the other point of view.

I don't know about courts, but I think that religion should be taught in school as a separate subject, about religion only. It should not go and mess up science classes by teaching creationist ideas of intelligent design.

In the U.S.?
Well, just ask a fundy. They will say the U.S. is a Christian nation and therefore religion ought to be preached in the schools (and their flaky version of it, mind you!).
Frankly, I think what is lacking in the U.S. public schools is a comprehensive ACADEMIC course on religion. Teach them all from a historical perspective. At least, it might promote tolerance of non-Christian beliefs and at best it might well get kids thinking about how ridiculous the whole concept of religion is!

My thoughts are, that all the original schools were Christian and there was more peace in the schools. Now after Madelin we have God taken out of schools and its sometimes a battle ground. The constitution was reinterpreted to say separation of church and state, that is not what it says. Liberal judges have perverted the interpretation and the schools have suffered. The suicide rate among teens is deplorable, the kids have no hope, since God has been taken out of schools.

I don't think it would hurt as a Chrisitain in my heart I want Jesus taught every where...But basically that should be taught at home....and in chruch...since you are teaching such a diverse bunch of kids how would you know which religion to teach them? They all have different backgrounds.....unless it is a private , religious school...I believe that religions should be taught at home or church

Keep religion out of schools. The teachers can barely teach the subjects they are supposed to know, and we don't need our children being subjected to more scienfitic theories/GUESSES that can't be proven. So take evolution out of the schools because it is just a faith-based belief, which makes it a religion.

Well seens how there is so much violence & competition in school anyways, maybe a li'l God in schools could help. Not a particular religion, just to teach them about the basic LOVE (true unconditional love) that Jesus had for us, by the grace of His father in Heaven. Can't hurt, God being left behind on so many things is partly to blame for this country's shortcomings (in my opinion). But I believe in His will so we'll see...:o[]

Religion should stay at home or in church, unless every religion can be taught in school. but school is for education not religion.

optional classes would be a step forward. Take several of the religions and teach them all to whoever would prefer them as an elective.
