How do you apply word problems, algebra in nursing?

Here's some recent algebraic throw down by my son's pediatricians nurse.

700 grams gained in 2 weeks.

How many grams per day is he gaining?

700 = 14 * GPD
GPD = 700/14
GPD = 50

I don't know any specific examples, but algebra skills are important in chemistry, and chemistry is a big part of nursing.
