I want to start making childrens birthday cakes and have got some character tins, but I only have a sponge recipe for a basic 9" round cake. How do you know what to do with the recipe in order to ensure the cake is the right consistency for the tin?

Kitty Litter Cake Recipe

This funny cake was shared on our forum by Mitzi. It's made to look like a kitty litter tray, tootsie rolls and all!
INGREDIENTS:

* 1 German Chocolate Cake Mix
* 1 White Cake Mix
* 1 package White Sandwich Cookies
* 1 Large package Vanilla Instant Pudding Mix
* Green food coloring
* 12 Small Tootsie Rolls
* 1 *NEW* kitty litter box
* 1 *NEW* kitty litter box plastic liner
* 1 *NEW* pooper scooper

PREPARATION:
Prepare cake mixes and bake according to directions (any size pans). Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble.

Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in blender, they tend to stick, so scrape often.

use a measuring cup and see how many cups of water it takes to fill your cake pan. This is how many cups of cake batter you will need. I do this then mark the amount on the bottom of the pan in a marker so I dont have to remember from one time to the next.

Most recipes tell you how many cups they produce. Use this as a guide to tell you how many recipes you need to fill your cake pans.

Hope this helps. I have done custom cake design and decorating for 18+ years and have used this idea many times when I was unsure about how much batter I needed to make.

I would also check the internet for another cake recipe (other than sponge) and practice until you can make it well. For certain custom and character cakes a nice pound cake recipe holds up better to the decorating and design.

first measure how many cups it holds, you can use water.

fill the tin with water and empty it into a big measuring cup.

so you will know how much mix you will need

since most mixes are in cups you will know how much to buy or make from scratch.

good luck

You're probably going to have to do trial and error.
