You have two questions. The first: The desire for personal pleasure even at the cost of hurt to others. As I think about this I might have stated this wrong. I love my son more that anything in this world and it is my personal pleasure for him to have goodness and happiness in his life. That’s part of love right, to be delighted over someone else’s happiness.
So my answer is lack of love.
And the second part: why some people suffer and not others.
I don’t know. Could be deeper question of life itself, or just chance.

greed, and pride. Pride is the root of all sin and greed is the root of that. All together. Sin is th root of all evil. It is human nature to sin. We are more likely to sin then to not sin in every thought word and deed. That's not to say some of us don't try hard, it's to say the root of evil is by those who don't try hard to live a good life and feel justified because of pride and blame.

St.Paul said "The LOVE of money is the root of all kinds of evil".People have taken that and said "Money is the root of all evil".
Well it's the Love of money that keeps us from feeding more of the poor etc.But it's also Love ...period ,that makes people let go of it for good organizations like "Feed the Chidren" and "World Vision"et al.

The root cause for all evil is disobedience to God.
God has given us a set of rules and standards to live by and we disobey them and when we do we suffer and when we obey them and follow his commandments we are blessed.

Religion is the root of all evil. Yes, for many it teaches good morals and to love thy neighbour etc, but for others it justifies discrimination, hate, prejudice, and for some reason gives them the right to murder innocent people. Personally, I agree with many religious teachings as they are simply good morals, but think of how much hate, and how many deaths have occurred in the name of religion.
