No, electric cars don't have to be expensive. The most economical electric cars are conversions. An old car with a good body is obtained, the engine is removed, and an electric drivetrain is installed. Cars like this can be had for as little as $5000. Check out this link:

The reason you can't buy a mainstream electric car, and why you can't get one from a conventional car dealer is a complicated subject. Let's just say there are powerful forces at work that you and I can't control.

I drive an electric car. A very old one, built in 1981. It still has all the original motor parts and electronic parts from 25 years ago. Electric vehicles are very reliable. The batteries (lead-acid) need to be be changed after about 20,000 to 30,000 miles, but they cost me less than $1000, so this is only a few cents per mile. The electricity only costs me about 1 cent per mile. Add these together, and it comes to about 5 cents per mile, much cheaper than gasoline.

Best of luck!

Dangerous nuclear power? Nuclear power is statistically safer than wind power which is one of the things you probably like (but then again, you only seem to like useless power sources). The reason that they are wanting safe nuclear power is because nuclear power is the only clean power source that can actually supply all the electricity needs of a country (look at how badly wind has failed in Denmark and how many coal power plants Germany is building because wind and solar aren't good enough to run a power grid). They were very much forced into nuclear because it's the only thing that can do the job required, if solar and wind had even a faint hope of being able to take over from fossil fuels and the old nuclear power plants that are going to be decommissioned soon then that's what they'd be doing. Now if you want to switch over to solar and wind you'll need massive technological improvements in energy storage technology to be able to deal with the unreliability. Currently they deal with the unreliability of those two power sources by having natural gas fired generators back them up which means that they are partly fossil fuel and thus not in any way environmentally friendly. Nuclear fission OTOH doesn't need any technological improvements to be viable, France got to about 80% nuclear using last generation reactors and emit practically no CO2 when generating their electricity.

Most dealers don't sell them because there are very few electric vehicles being manufactured. The few that are have very poor range and are generally only good for short-haul local driving. Because of very low volume, the few electric cars that are made are relatively expensive. You won't save any money with one yet.

In the US Electric Hybrid cars are very costly. Typically if you want a Toyota Prius or a Honda Civic Hybrid you have to get on a waiting list. The reason they are so costly is because they are still a novelty, but you also have to calculate the cost of their expensive maintenance. Lets say you bought one and kept it for a few years and the warranty has lapsed where do you take it for a reasonable repair cost?

The problem with solely electric cars is they need a recharge after a few hundred miles. They are not good for long distance driving.
Hybrid cars are what most dealers are concentrating on now, since they are great for distances, and don't need recharging (they do that when they are being driven)

They don't sell them because there is no electric car currently in production, other than golf carts or specialty vehicles.
The last mass produced electric vehicle was the GM EV-1, available as only as a lease. It was plagued with too many problems and was eventually all dismantled.
