I have a prescription that has never been filled. Will my pharmacist still honor is or has it expired even though there are no exp. dates written on the paper itself? Is it worth my effort to drive down there and find out?

Prescriptions are valid for one year from the date written by your physician. The only exceptions are controlled medications, which are good for six months and some special types of controlled medications, which are valid for only 7 days.

the first answer was pretty close. In fact in their state, it might only be 7 days to fill what is called a "C2" prescription. In my state it is 30 days, which is also the federal limit.

If the prescription isn't dated, the pharmacist will have to contact the physician to get it.

If the prescription has expired, then it is worthless.

The doctor would have written the date it was prescribed on the prescription. Call the pharmacy first and tell them the date and see if they will fill it. If it's for a narcotic, they may not if it is really old.

it varies state to state. most states its 1 year from the date the doctor wrote it, some states it is 18 months. if it is a controlled (common controlleds include antidepressants/mental health drugs, pain killers, cough medicines) they often expire after 6 months in some states
