Aren't they just as curious as believers? Isn't that obvious from their searching?

Independent thinking and curiosity, are key to cultivating intelligence. "Not liking" something, is just a personal irritation. Maybe some people need to have a focus on something unprovable in order to explain their purpose here, that way they don't have to fight with the question, "why am I here and what is my purpose"? Most all of humanity has one goal in the end...To get off this rock.
When all is said and done does anyone want to stay here? It's Human nature to explore and be curious,( think outside the box) not to be rubber stamped or led like sheep.

"A person cannot deny the Lord and still live successfully." rkirby133

This doesn't make any sense to me, since the neighborhoods I've visited that are ultra religious are also some of the poorest, most miserable people I've ever met. The only difference is that instead of hoping for something better, they just throw up their hands, accept it as God's will, and hope that when they get to heaven things will be better.

I've done research, and religion, quite frankly, is just too full of contradictions to be taken seriously. It's a nice story, but that's all it is. The bible is full of metaphors for good living --don't kill, don't steal, be nice to your parents, don't worry so much about what your neighbor's got...and in that context it works great. It's only when people start taking the bible literally and believing that these events actually happened is when people start getting into trouble. When people start holding up the bible and telling people that the way they live, which harms no one else, is an abomination...I've got a problem with that.

I don't have much of a problem with god's so-called teachings, really. It's ultra right-wing holier-than-thou Christians I can't stand...

No, not really. Human nature is to be swayed by emotions. Religions make use of this most. It is human nature to be curious and find out things. Isn't that obvious from the Christians here searching?

I think you are on to something to some extent. Many people like to think they are in total control. They do not like the idea of anyone being able to control them but doesn't everyone have someone they have to answer to? Well the bottom line is we are all answerable to God.

It is not that an atheist can not believe in God, it is more that they chose not to believe. Even the Bible states there are no real atheist in Romans chapter one. It says the very nature of things declares there is a God so they are without excuse.

Not believing in something does not make it go away Many people die because they refuse to believe that chest pain is a heart attack. Not believing it did not make it indigestion.

No, Atheism isn't a by-product of human nature. I don't believe in the existence of god not because I want to be different but the fact that I find it irrational and highly superstitious. Religious people are the by-produce of human nature to fit in to what everyone says. The need to fit in is more primal than the need to be different.

I might be curious but I don't look for answers by listening to religious people preach. I go out and find answers with rational reasoning.

I would agree to an extent that part of it is to like to think and do as you please, yet most Atheists don't base their belief because of that. Most of us hold (or have held) jobs or been a part of formal schooling where we have to accept authority, so it isn't a situation like the punk rock kids that have a problem with authority or following rules. In addition, many of us follow laws which are exactly meant to dictate what we can and can't do. What I'm trying to get at is that we believe as we do because of lack of evidence, not rebellion. Personally, if lets say magically you'd find indesputable scientific proof of a deity, I wouldn't be an Atheist regardless of how much I'd like to think my way and do my way.

Isn't Theism just a product of human nature, liking to be told what to think and do?
Are they just not as curious as atheists? isn't that obvious from their unquestioning acceptance and lack of inquiry?

Disbelief is the default position because it is wrong to believe any given proposition e.g. God exists, when there is no evidence to suggest it is true. You're looking at it from the wrong angle. The only people who need to provide justifications are believers. I disbelieve-no reason, no need to explain anything-deal with it.

We are blined by our sin nature - and gain knowledge of the truth through faith.
A person cannot deny the Lord and still live successfully. Mankind was created to acknowledge God and share a relationship with Him. When someone chooses to ignore the truth of His existence or His sovereignty, he or she begins a downward slide. It’s a choice which ends with a hardened heart and eternal separation from a loving Father.

God gives everyone the capacity to understand Him and the free will to choose whether to pursue that knowledge. The truth of His existence is revealed in nature and written into every person’s conscience. However, many people ignore reality because it interferes with their preferred lifestyle. Instead, they chase false philosophies, which are usually mixed with just enough truth to make them believable to the inexperienced.

Any “truth” crafted by man is foolishness. A mind that has rejected the fact of a sovereign Lord cannot see its error. It has slipped from intelligence—an inherent knowledge of God — to willful ignorance. In this state, even when all evidence points to the truth, a person can still convince him- or herself that the opposite is right.

All the denial and atheistic arguments in the world will not change what is real. Jehovah is God. Jesus Christ is His Son. God created you to love, obey, and honor Him. If you resist the truth, you choose a life of darkness and willful ignorance. The choice is yours to make.
