It is irritation of the sciatic nerve and it can be cured if the cause is identified and dealt with.

I cured my sciatica with this natural treatment http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

PAINFUL! (all too bitter experience of this one I'm afraid!)
As to whether it can be cured depends largely on what is causing it.
In my situation, I have a herniated disk and the contents of the disk are pressing onto my sciatic nerve (the largest nerve in the body) I would need surgery to cure it or at least alleviate it to some extent.
Often people that have a slipped disk (which can also cause sciatica) can be cured through physiotherapy.
Other people may find their sciatica disappears or is at least tolerable when taking anti-inflammatory medication.
It is important to find out the cause as the treatments vary - an MRI scan is a good start.

A cure would depend on the cause of the sciatica. For me it's a permanantly prolapsed disc that can't be cured. Sciatica is so painful and the toes on my right foot are always numb too. Fortunately the pain isn't continuous. You have my deepest sympathy if you have permanant pain. Good luck with your cure.

Ever since I've owned a wallet I always put it in my back left trouser pocket, which meant whenever I sat down I would sit on the wallet... This was the primary cause of my left hip pain (which was actually sciatica) so once I'd managed to break the habit of putting my wallet in that pocket (which is a damn sight harder than it sounds) my sciatica cleared up.

This is better than their really giving you rhus,, though, since it is a deadly poison. Only one question to Ray Can you cure sciatica like diseases with water..???

It often occurs when the Sciatic nerve becomes trapped or pinched. This is due to wear on the spine, depending how bad the wear is it can be operated on and various insertions to support the vertebrae implanted but I have had it for years due to heavy lifting and would not want to risk it as earlier trials left a few people paralysed>
I do not think that happens now but it is a worry. I do exercises the Phsyio showed to me ( takes about 10 mins every day and is not strenuous) and if it gets really bad I take Ibuprofen max strength
