Well if its whining all the time I take it you're not treating his arthritis, and if you are you aren't using the right meds. The dog is obviously wary of children and will be a danger to the child. Perhaps given his health and issues with kids, it may be time to have put down. 12 is pretty old for a dog and quality of life is extremely important as they grow older. Personally I'd say its time.

Think of it this way.... When you are sick and don't feel good are you your normal self or do you get cranky some times?? I know when I'm sick at times I get snappy and I don't want to be bothered. Please take you dog to the vet,get a diagnosis, and get medications to ease the dogs pain. There are two really good meds tha you can get from your vet. One is Rimidyl and the other is Deramax. The Deramax is the most expensive of the two. I've used both for two different dogs of mine. One had cancer and the other arthritis. Please do all you can for the dog before the thought of euthanizing him comes to your mind. You owe that to your beloved pet. In the mean time, don't let your granddaughter around the dog. I wish you all the best and I hope your dog is feeling much better real soon!!! You could find a boarding kennel for the dog,but if you do make sure you take it something comfortable to lay on so he's not laying on a cold hard surface. Also get the meds for him before you leave.

yes.......you should first take it to the vet, if he/she has arthritis there is medicine that will help the pain and make the dog feel much better. It could be something else, too - and the vet will help determine that. As for behavior with children - it is very likely that you have not trained the animal to be around childran AND the children how to treat animals. BOTH need to be done. That is what a good owner and a good grandparent does. As far a s traveling, if you are not able to travel with your pet - find a pet sitter who will take care of it in your own home and follow your routine or board it with your vet or othere accredited kennel - but if you dog is not used to being around other dogs this may be too stressful of an environment for him/her.
When you adopt an animal - you commit yourself to the animal for a lifetime. It is not easy, and it is not cheap. But you have made a promise to the animal to care for it. It is like having a child - you take care of it to the best of your ability for rest of it's life. Putting the animal down for no good cause is inexcusable. Would you want family to put you down because you are old and have arthritis and are inconvenient?

You can kennel your dog with your vet if they have that kind of facility. I would get a checkup because if the dog's behavior changed, it may be sick. I was there with my 7 yr old lab/mix. One day she was the sweetest thing and the next snappy and growling. She had kidney failure and we didn't know. Her checkup was normal, it just happened suddenly. If there is nothing wrong with the dog, but poses a danger to the child, you may have to consider getting rid(giving away to a home with no children or other animals) of the dog.

train the dog. I am sick of people who get dogs and don't train them then have problems when a child is involved.. the dog is part of your family to and it is your problem he is snappy. try and re train him or re home him to a good home with owners that do know the responsibility of having a dog. it is a shame people are too lazy to train there dogs as children and dogs can become best friends and inseparable.
hire a dog sitter/ house sitter when you go away or take the dog with you.

Put it where? If you mean put it down, then I suggest some discipline and correct training. You could send it to kennels to be looked after and a dog should NEVER be left unsupervised with children anyway. It sounds the dog is an inconvenience to you.

permanent solution to temporary problems - and the lazy way out. Not technically cruel, but I'll never place a pup with you, nor most ethical breeders, as you would not be considered a good home.

How would you feel when you get old. Your kids will put you away in a nursing home. Just think the next time you get mad at a kid how an old dog feels. Do you like someone to pull on your ears when you don't feel like good.
