365 and 1/4 days in a year, as the earth rotates around the sun. the 1/4 is why we have a leap year every for years to make up the extra day, or otherwise we would slip time and have winter in summer etc etc.

It was originally the Sumerians who divided the day into 24 parts! I don't know why - it could be to do with the position of the sun and moon in the sky!
