Shouldn't we just build a base there a fort so to speak? And just stay .

Should a base or "fort" be built within any country which has not granted express permission then this would be seen as an act of occupation and not LIBERATION which is what the intentions of the allies were at the beginning of the military action in Iraq. Until a viable and stable government is in charge of the country no such permission would be attainable.

When the Iragi people are trained well enough to take care of themselves
we will pull out. You will probably never see a complete pullout though. We still have military in Japan, Cuba, Germany, South Korea, etc. There will almost always be some mlitary troops there, like so many places in the world.

No my friend it is not Indian and Cowboys anymore. The Indians run out of water, the Iraqis will not run out of oil before you run out of gas.By the way your bases in Vietnam didn't do to well, did they.Nor do your bases in Iraq or Afghanistan, may be you like to try a base or two in Iran and/or North Korea. Basically you ran out of options, didn't you.

Yes we should have a hardened base and use that to strike at areas in turmoil.
We need miles of barb wire through out Baghdad streets and electrical service only to friendly areas.
Let Muslim kill Muslim for a awhile. We need to stop being a security force and start being a strike force.

Haven't you heard about the Green Zone. It is a fortress. Several Army groups are bunkered down in Sadaams palaces which were constructed as military compounds with deep bunkers and powerplants. So far the US Army is staying for the benefit of Haliburton and other American coprorations profiting from the chaos.
