The answer is no, but if you are called mate by another person it can mean either you are a special friend or he is a casual friend that would like to be a little closer. As a partner you would be in the same class as a married couple.

Sometimes 'mate' doesn't even mean they're a friend or buddy. It's just a friendly way of greeting in the UK, like when you get in a taxi and you say, "Alright mate, can you take me to Golders Green?"

'Mate' is a common form of addressing someone, especially in London.

depends on what country you're in. In Britain it means buddy or friend or pal. In America, we don't introduce each other as a mate. And mate usually means in America having sex (in scientific terms like wilderness shows). It's not part of our regular slang/jargon though.

No, it just means they see you as a friend and have no particular feelings for you at all. BUT, some people use it as a sign of affection. Don't know enough of the circumstances to give a proper answer.

I agree with everybody else.............it just means friend......like buddy, so if you are hoping for some romance with this person, I'm afraid you might be disappointed, mate. Sorry.
