The only way I can explain it is: When you are a child and you do something mean that you have been told not to do. If your parents find out, you are punished for it. Your parents love you as much as ever but they still punished you. Why? Because they love you so much that they want you to learn from your mistakes and be a better person. There are children that are incorrigible and the punishment never seems to help them. They are the ones that get sent to military school or reformatory.
Picture God as the parent and God always does what is right and is always just. If he tells you something it will always be the truth. He has promised hell for those who do not repent. He does not WANT you to go to hell, but he HAS to send you there if you do not mind. Something like your dad, when he is about to spank you and he tells you that this is going to hurt him more than it will you.

God is an all loving and Merciful God. But he can't let your sins go unpunished. Thats why he sent his Son (Jesus Christ) to die on the cross (and rise to life on the third day) in doing so he took the punishment that you deserve making sure your sins gets paid for so
you can go to heaven. But you got to accept Jesus into your life, otherwise you are saying no to what he has done for you, leaving your sins unpunished which will lead you to eternal punishment.

It's confusion caused by the conflicting opinions of God in the old and new testiments. Originally he said that he was a jealous god and found smiting infidels to be quite effective. Then Jesus came along and changed who God was from angry god to loving god.

As you said, Allah is The All Merciful, Forgiving and Loving but He is the Most Fair as well. Religion is not tisted; it is how people present it. The verses in Quran that promise pious people heaven and rewards from Allah outnumber those which promise hell and torture.
Allah's justice incur that those who did well be rewared and those who sinned be punished but His Mercy is above everything and He is Quite Capable of forgiving us all even if we do not deserve it.

It is the preachers with some vested interest,
are to be blamed for scaremongering. Whether you
believe in God or not, there may be some truth in it,
that one has to repay for one's evil deed.

If a god really existed then he would be source of all evil, and be responsible for all the horror and suffering in the world. Fortunately, gods are just imaginary - Who'd want to live in a universe presided over by such a creature?

God isn't loving. He's nothing.
Religion uses the "God's wrath" and "God's love" as part of the stick and carrot routine to gain converts. If you listen to religious arguments, they are almost always appeals to emotions. They will try to scare you or tempt you into believing their myth. It is very effective, because humans have been emotional animals for far longer than rational ones.
