Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sins. We are only human - if it were up to us to earn our way into heaven we'd never make it. But God, who loves us the way a father loves his children, sent Jesus to teach us about what love really means, and asked Jesus to suffer betrayal at the hands of one of his closest friends and to die a horrible painful torturous death to pay for our sins. The bible says there is no greater love than this: to lay down one's life for his friends.
We all are sinners. God loves us anyway. If God didn't love sinners, who would he love? It would be a pretty short list. He hates our sin, especially when we hurt one another, but like a loving father he doesn't stop loving us when we mess up. When we are faced with temptation and we stop to think about Jesus's crucifixion, we think of what our sins did to him, believe me that's often enough to make us stop, turn around, and do the right thing.
Jesus's death on the cross is a testament to God's love for us all.

The Crucifixion - it's taking all the sins of humanity and paying for it by death. Paid for by the blood of Christ. To avail of this, you'll just have to believe in Christ in faith.
