. If you want a country, which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you, he said on national television. I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia, one the Australian law and another the Islamic law, that is false. If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country, which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option, Costello However, there are a few things that those who have recently come into our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. The idea of Australia being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Australians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories, by millions of men and women, who have sought freedom. This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you to take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE! If you aren't happy here then LEAVE! We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.

I totally agree. Why go to another Country if you have no interest in what that Country stands for! So many immigrant families all over the World (including English) want to move whilst staying where they are!

If you don't want to embrace the culture of another country, and do not want to be loyal and governed by that Country, why on Earth leave your own country?

Surely you emigrate because of the life awaiting you, not to take EVERYTHING with you (including your government)! I always thought this was called 'INVASION'!

I can see myself getting into trouble here but here i go.

Chances are as a white Australian you or your family were immigrants at some point - and you destroyed the existing Australian culture. Given you have done that to the aboriginals how can you now prevent others from doing the same? When your ancestors arrived everyone probably complained about them - how you were taking jobs or changing the culture. Now people like Costello are doing to others. They never learn.

Australia is basically a nation of immigrants and what defines our "culture" if there is one is that we have taken all these different cultures and melded them together into who we are today. Our culture is multi-culturalism - it has not been weakened by it. It will happen with the Muslims as well.

Compare this to England - a bland pessimistic culture. I see immigration has transformed us from what they are into what we are today.

As each new group arrives the same old arguments are made. These new comers will integrate eventually and will then complain about the next group of newcomers.

Also remember not everyone has the right to leave - even if you are an Australian citizen. where will you go because most countries will not accept you? What about if you are fleeing torture? Its a silly statement and is just grand standing to score political points.

Personally I don't agree with Sharia law and I think a very small % of people see it as being realistically implementable in Australia. Also I don't know much about it - I'm guessing most people dont. But there are probably some aspects of it that we can learn from, others we can ignore and vica-versa. So why not take the best bits to improve us all? Most of our laws are based on Christian values, and we do share the old testament with Muslims so there is probably more in common then you think.

Sometimes politicians talk about things to make themselves seem important. But lets face it this is a non issue. Why should the PM be devoting his attention to what could only be a hundred or so people who hold these extreme views? I am sure he could find better ways to spend his time.

Agree, it is about time governments stopped bowing to Ethnic and Minority groups, I live abroad and I have to accept the rules of where I live and speak the language, and I am not allowed to drive on the left either. Another point, if you live in a Muslim country and did not accept there way of life you would possibly end up dead,

Yeah, I agree ragarding muslims. If someone wan't an islamic law, than a secular state isn't a place to practice barbaric laws. I don't agree and his comments about "christian beliefs". Australia is a secular state and everyone can critisize the religion.

I agree with the idea that Sharia law is an idiotic idea -- I do not share his view that multiculturalism is a bad thing.

The PM of every country in the world should be making this statement. You must accept the country you immigrate to, whether you are Muslim, Jew, Christian, or other.

In Britain we are suffering from years or bowing to weaker cultures out of guilt for the strength of our home culture, a hangover from imperial days. This means that for extremists they see their strong cultre as stronger than the home culture and believe they have aright to impose their own over it. We need to show them that ours is stronger BUT we should also bear in mind that culture is ever-growing and developing and needs to absorb other influences. The danger is that you start saying 'This is our culture' and close yourself off to other beneficial influences. For example my favourite food is curry absolutley love it and is the favourite food of britain but if we were all like my racist next door neighbour we'd still all be eating meat and 2 veg every night
