First of all wmv (Windows Media Video) & avi (Audio Video Interleave) are two different formats, although I dont understand why you want to do this conversion.
Try using the following:

The Film Machine
Nero 7

If it doesnt show the file extension already (.wmv), open "My Computer" or the folder you where your movie is..."Tools" > "Folder Options" > "View" tab > uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types-ON" box.
Then rename your file with .avi instead of .wmv
You wont need to download any programs to change this, to your computer; it's all the same.

avi is not a proper format... You need to convert using a codec like divX.

u need to convert it. Use WinAvi. It will helps you alot. U won't regret it.
