This is an excellent playdough recipe which is fun to make and never fails to provide amusement on a rainy afternoon!

You will need:

1 cup plain (all-purpose) flour

½ cup salt

2 tablespoons cream of tartar

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 cup water with food coloring added

1 teaspoon vanilla essence (optional but it makes the playdough smell nice!)

Put all the ingredients into a large saucepan, and stir over a medium heat until the dough forms into a ball. Allow to cool, and then knead until smooth.

Store in an airtight container (a Ziploc bag with the air pressed out is good).

No-Cook Clay Dough

3 cups flour

3 cups salt

3 tablespoons alum

as much water as needed

Combine ingredients and slowly add water, a little at a time. Mix well with spoon. As mixture thickens, continue mixing with your hands until it has the feel of clay. If it feels too dry, add more water. If it is too sticky, add equal parts of flour and salt

All the above are great recipes, I recommend home made Play do as most if the kids I know can't resist giving it a wee taste when they think you're not looking (curiousity) and the shop bought stuff is non toxic but prob. doesn't taste too good.

I got this recipe from Hungry Jacks. It's the easiest and it's great playdough.

HJ's Putty:
1/2 cup salt
1 cup plain flour
2 tbsp cream of tartar
1 cup boiling water
1 tbsp oil
food colouring

Mix it all together and voile!

Carrie s has the same recipe I use but sometimes, instead of food coloring and vanilla, I use the cheap "kool-aid" type unsweetened drink powder, just one of the small packets adds color and scent.

i think its one cupful flour, half cupful salt (to stop little ones eating playdough) water, and if you want food colour, i think you can put a tiny bit of oil in it as well to make it more pliable.

Flour, water, salt and food colour. Must have the salt or it will go off.
