people yawn because they are not getting enough oxygen, there is not enough around them and the people around you are also breathing in the same air so they are not getting enough oxygen either, that's why they start yawning as well......

Yawning is not really contagious. Its just that conditions which will cause one person to yawn are likely to be the same as the conditions that will make others yawn. So if you are all together under the same conditions there is no reason why everyone can't want to yawn. God I'm nearly asleep answering that.

my theory is that when man was still living in caves it made sense for most people to sleep at the same time and that way they would not wonder off and get lost. Yawning and the contagiousness of yawning was a signal that it was time for everyone to go to sleep.

I know!!!

Because a yawn is a lack of oxygen so when you yawn your lungs lungs get a bit more o2 than usual.

When you yawn you take a little bit of o2 from the area which means that that everybody else is not taking in quite as much!

This results in their bodies thinking "oh **** i need me some oxygen" thus a yawn happens!

No one really knows why we yawn. there are several theories about it. some animlas yawn from time to time, but apparently humansand primates are the only ones that yawn contagiously.

Some belive it is a subconsious action, that we are not aware of it happening untill we do it.

When we are children, we watch our mothers closley to see how things are done. eating, walking , cleaning and talking. We mimic certain things, even right down to facial expressions. It could be an unconsious throw back to that 'learned' behavior.

When someone yawns and you are aware of it, you process the information in the part of the brain that controls unconscious movement - breathing etc. And you brain tells you that it is not getting enough oxygen so you take an extra gasp of air.... or yawn as we would describe it. It is not because we are tired, but this may help....
