I think you may have a good ideal here. I will try that this year. At least it saves them from having to ask where you bought it from.

From the gift recepient's point of view, having to return the gift for cash is a GREAT idea. But the problem is, not all stores accept refunds except on grounds that the gift is faulty or a manufacture defect. Then again, they may only replace the gift and no cash refund.
I think it's much better to give CASH or health food as gifts. :p Almost no one rejects health food (they are getting better in the TASTE department).
Sometimes it's the thought that counts, you never know if the person who gave you the gift spent hours looking for it, or if he's handicap in gift-wrapping.

I like to shop where gift receipts are given, but if I can't I make sure that have a liberal return policy.

Because a GIFT CERTIFICATE is: TOTALLY IMPERSONAL !!!! And it just SCREAMS to the recipient: YOU are NOT IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO ME for ME to spend MY PRECIOUS time making an EFFORT to find something SPECIAL -- just for you !!!
When I get one, that is exactly how it makes me feel -- unless the giver is a bedridden quadroplegic who has no one who will shop for her/him !!!!!!
The ACT OF GIVING A GIFT is for the EXACT PURPOSE of SHOWING someone HOW MUCH WE CARE !!! That we care ENOUGH to spend the TIME, THOUGHT, EFFORT to get a cherished someone something SPECIAL -- SOMETHING JUST FOR THEM, ESPECIALLY FOR THEM !!!
My husband has NEVER GRASPED this meaning and 4 times each year he rips my heart out by letting me know that he can't bbe bothered or waste HISPRESIOUS TIME looking for a SPECIAL GIFT FOR ME FOR THE LAST 37 YEARS!!! On my 1st BD with him when I was 16 years old, I still remember waking up that Saturday morning expecting a SPECIAL GIFT -- as it was my 1st BD with him & it WAS MY 16TH BD !!!! I remember I was crushed to the core, feeling like someone had shot me thru the HEART, when I realized he had not even had it CROSS HIS MIND !!!! I cried most the day !!!! This coming Sunday I will be hurt again, as he doesn't care enough to spend a few hours shopping -- just for me, to show me I'm SPECIAL !!!! If I'm lucky I will recieve my favorite flowers, which I will have to arrange myself -- to 'save money' and I will recieve the same bottle of perfume -- IF, I'm REALLY, REALLY LUCKY. aND i WONT EVEN GET THOSE THINGS IF i DONT DROP HINTS ABOUT OUR anniversary ALL OVER THE PLACE !!!!!
He has taken all the joy out of life and gift giving to him, as I make extreme efforts to give him wonderful gifts and he finally hit on his ROUTINE "GIFTS" and I'm not worth any more involved thinking or effort on his part! So, I will cry again & MORE bitter feelings will build up inside me!!!!!!! When I first met him, this was due to the fact that in his "so called 'family' he learned no better" becuz NO ONE, including his "mother" gave a damn about him & he recieved nothing more than "maybe" a shirt (which she should have gotten him anyway as her obligation to cloth her child), so I forgave him the 1st few times as I tried to make that up to him & teach him about Gift Giving, but for the past 30 years he's known better & just doesn't give a damn!!!!!!! And it hurts, DEEPLY !!!!! And he refuses to try.
So, my dear questionee, that is why 'WE DON'T" 'just give gIFT cERTIFICATES' -- at least not to loved ones, family & close friends !!!!!!
If this helps you understand, please VOTE mine Best Answer. THANK YOU !!!
WHOOPS, SORRY. i MISUNDERSTOOD THIS QUESTION! i THOUGHT YOU ASKED "WHY SHOULDN'T YOU JUST GIVE A " gift certificate" ! SORRY ! I was gonna erase this, but someone may learn from it, so I'll leave it, and maybe someone will be spared the HEARTACHE I continually recieve !!!!!!!!
Yes, it's good to let the person know that you do not mind if they need to make an exchange of your gift and that you'll be happy to give them the reciept if they'd like to have it (I wouldn't just put it in the box on most gifts -- except for maybe grandkids gifts, as kids they just want what they want and havent the reciept handy gives them the freedom to rush out and get it, but for older friends and relatives, I'd just tell them feel free to ask for receceipt !!! Also, make a copy of rcpt on your fax machine, just incase you need it per your CC bill or if they lose the original !!!! Yours sincerely, Barbie
