Regression analysis is the general term applied to determine the parametric fitting of a model equation to data and the degree of compliance of that fit. The simplest is linear regression, fitting a line to data that appears to be linearly dependent. The regression coefficient gives you some indication of the degree of fit between the data and the model equation.
