I am not familiar with a 'running bowline' but different areas name different knots. The bowline is a simple to tie knot that is used in climbing and anchoring. It is not quite as strong as a figure 8 knot, but takes up less space and can generally be easier to untie if weighted. The bowline can work loose with repeated weigh on/off, but is a very useful knot. Tying a bowline and backing it up with a half hitch or doing a yosemite bowline is more bomb proof.
