EDIT: Judith R, you clearly have NO idea what you are talking about. I am CURRENTLY IN A MIDDLE EASTERN COUNTRY, and have more freedom here to practice religion than i did in the US. I do not wear an abaya, or a hijab. I wear what i want, and i speak how i want, about what i want, to whomever i want.
You ignorance is disgusting, and it's blinding you.

From what i have read about the Hijab, it is not a mandatory item of clothing, but definitely a suggested one. The hijab originated from women who were not wearing them commonly being confused as Slaves, and that is why Mohammed (PBUH) commanded all women to wear the Hijab. Due to the increasing modernization of Islam many are pulling away from the Hijab to fit in better. This does not decrease your faith, only makes you feel more comfortable.

Do what you feel is best for you and your life situation.

I'm not Muslim.

Salaam Aleycom

I am not Muslim, but have known several...

I would say that if you believe in your heart that this obligation
is the word of God.... (or Allah, in this case) and not merely a
way for Islamic men to control their women....

if during your studies of the Koran, you have found passages
clearly stating that women are required to wear hijab (and,
also assuming that you believe in your heart that these writings
are the word of Allah)....

if you feel that it is indecent for your hair to be viewed by any
man (other than your father, brother, husband, or close family
member).....

if you feel that your religious beliefs are better served by women
wearing hijab (or, for that matter, men wearing facial hair, or
ANY of the other current teachings of Islam).....

then, by all means, you SHOULD wear the hijab.

I say this because I believe in MY heart the words of my
country's Constitution, which allows for the freedom of
religion - ANYBODY'S religion. (Therefore, to say otherwise
would be an act of hypocrisy on my part.) Sadly, for this
very same reason, I would not dream to travel to any country
that would force me to adhere to the doctrines of a religion
I do not subscribe to - as is true, you must admit, of many
of the Muslim countries. So please, as you wear your hijab
pray for fairness, pray for understanding, pray for PEACE.

Khoda hafis

Its cool once you get used to it... I started wearing Hijab a couple of years ago, about 8 months after I converted... One day I walked over to my boss and said I wouldwear the hijab Fire me if you want!!! I thought I was toast for sure....(The guy was in total shock because he did not know I had converted) and next day when I went to pick up my things he said I do not care... You are one of the best engineers we have!!! And the rest is History!

Your choice ...head scarf is a good thing to wear ..
because it keeps your hair clean .in cold weathers it keeps you worm ..down side is..if you live in the west .. it separates you from others ..and this day and age you will
face hatred by ignorant people you will probably ..find it difficult at school or at work ..
Having said that ..if you want to keep your identity grate
wear it ....

native american women are supposed to always have their legs covered in ceremonies-so i can understand how a muslim woman would want to wear a scarf...christains how would feel if lil kim went to church in her work clothes??? oh wait-i thought it was good for her to be liberated...

nothing is wrong with expressing their cultural and religious pride -if cross necklaces can be worn than so can a scarf

most important is wearing something does not show your body (neither tight nor transparent ) and covering your hair..and u still can be trendy and look nice but conservative.
Good luck .
p.s my sister's name is Karma too and she wears a very nice veil :)

I'm not Muslim, but you should wear what you feel is important to you and what you feel comfortable in, ask your family to help you decide on this.

I do not want to criticize your religion. But I hope you do not. I see it as a symbol of female subjugation that is practiced too much by too many followers of Islam.

It is my hope that my Muslim sisters will lead the way in the reform of Islam--and make it a truly great religion again--this is not the way.
