I am wondering specifically about bi-polar disorder....

I have a friend who is bi-polar and tells me that her doctor says its ok to drink sometimes which I thought didn't sound right, being that I've been on anti-depressants and such myself and I was always told it was a big no no. Personally I think her doctor didn't say she could but she may well be an alcoholic and looking for an excuse.

No (no no no no no)!

My best mate's ex-girlfriend was on anti-depressants and would skip days every once and again so that she could drink. This led to fights between her and everybody as she lost all self control under the influence (made worse by the fact that she wasn't taking her medication properly) and the eventual break up of her and my buddy.

If you respect yourself and you love the people around you, don't do it. Its probably moderately safe for your body, but that doesn't make it a good idea.

Your answer about your friend u answered yourself. Bi-Polar is where u either real high and out of control maybe spend money uncontrollable. u feel high. The otherside is u get so depressed u lie on the couch and stay to yourself cut off from family friends etc. That is what the medicine is for to keep u stable. NEVER QUIT YOUR MEDS WITHOUT YOUR DR IS OKAY WITH IT!

No. There is a reason why on everyone of your prescriptions it says not to drink. Espeicially with bi-polar it is important and hard to keep a right balance of the medication. Alcohol messes this all up.

I am a bipolar woman and I drink alcohol about 1-2 evenings a month. My alcohol tolerance is much lower on meds than off so I drink a lot less, and never to get drunk.

Alcohol can act as a depressant, so it is not advised that you drink it.

Alcohol can also effect the action of some drugs. Not knowing what you are taking, it would be impossible to advise.

Best advice - ask your pharmacist or prescribing doctor.

PS - People have to stay on mood stabilisers for life...if you couldn't enjoy a few of lifes pleasures on them, then no one would stick to them...the key here though is usually moderation!

It is always better not to drink. U will understand urself much better. Drinks generally acts as depressents. So u r counteracting the medicinal effects for mental illness. One side u take to cure ur mental illness the other side u are activating it. U r old enough to understand.

No. Most medications of that sort usually have a label put on the prescription bottle telling you not to mix it with alcohol. Same goes for most pain meds and nerve meds and sleeping pills.

It's best not to drink when on med. Will slow down the effect of med., may also interfere with the action of med.

It's up to individual I think, I have friends who's suffering from schzophrenia and they drink occasionally, and there seems to be no symptoms whatsoever, jus go with the limits.
