Although the spleen serves a useful purpose (protecting immunity, along with the other components of the immune system), in certain cases it can be removed. The spleen is not an essential organ.
Nevertheless, patients who have had their spleen removed are at higher risk of getting infections, particularly during the first two years after the operation.

An NFL quarterback named Chris Sims (of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) recently underwent a spleenectomy when his was ruptured during a game. I'd look articles on him up and maybe even email him and see if you can get a personal response. It may make your friend feel a lot better to know that someone that underwent that procedure is planning a return to a highly intense sport like professional football.
