It's generally taken to mean "laugh out loud" and is usually used by those of limited vocabulary because they feel the need to tell you that they think they've said something funny and you might not have got the joke without that hint.
If "lol" is placed at the END of a message it is then taken as meaning "Lots of Love", but in each case, there is really no need to use it here because we aren't being charged for the number of letters or the time it takes to type them, so why not just say what you mean instead of using these silly text-messages! abbreviations
